HIKE TO THE MOUNTAIN TOP::

During your trek to the top of the mountain, you realize that it was much further than anticipated and the sun has now disappeared behind the mountains. Your path illuminated only by the pale glow of the moon. The chilling winds cut through your clothes, and your breath hangs in the frigid air. With each step, your fight against exhaustion threatens to consume you. Fueled by sheer willpower and desperate hope, you finally reach the top only to find that it is so dark that you are unable to see more that a few feet in front of you and it suddenly occurs to you that you are now unable to return to the crash site because it is too dark to find your way and your only option is to wait until morning to do anything.
The wind is much sharper and relentless in the absence of the trees and you are unable to find a place to get out of its painful bite. With one final hope, you pull off your backpack and reach inside the pocket for your cellphone. Your cold fingers barely able to grasp it as you pull it out. You are happy to see the screen light up from the vibration and with hopeful eyes you search the screen looking for the service icon. You give a quiet sigh as you find it empty, there is no cell service!! Frustrated, you sit and stare blankly at the screen in disappointment. You look up into the sky and are terrified to find that the moon is no longer visible as a single snowflake touches down on your face. It is at this moment that you realize you are totally unprepared and wish that you had stayed with the wreckage until morning. You know that you are at risk of losing your life to the elements.

THE BACKSTORY::

Your challenge begins on a warm October afternoon in the skys over Montana. You have chartered a small plane with a pilot to fly you back to your home town during a college break. The flight has been mostly uneventful with the exception of slightly alterning your flight course to go around a storm building in the East. Things are going well until you hear the planes engine begin to sputter. A quick glance at the pilots reaction confirms that its irregular and the look on his face begins to draw concern. As the sputter worsens, you find yourself looking out the windows for a possible places to set the plane down if the engine stops. Just then there is a loud pop and the windshield is instantly covered with oil as the engine goes quiet. Now the only sound you can hear is the wind whistling over the wings as the plane descends into the unknown.

A backpack is a very helpful survival item to help you organize and carry your supplies from point A to point B. It is a common staple for day hikers, school students, and crackheads. Without the backpack in your inventory, you will not be able to carry all of the items that you will need to survive if you decide to try to find your way home without rescue.
Besides the obvious uses, there are parts of the backpack that can be used to help in your quest for survival such as straps and strings. These items can be used for small game snares and various lashings.
<<elseif $book is true>>Obviously a book can be used to help you start a fire if you have some way to light it. It can also be used for hygiene purposes if you know what I mean. Besides those two uses, you can also read it to ward off boredom if you are waiting to be rescued.
Wouldn't it be so cool if it was a really good survival guide that helped you every step of the way instead of a History or English book? Just sayin...\
<<elseif $coat is true>>\

A coat is a must if you find yourself stranded in the high mountains in October. Hypothermia is a real threat and should be in the forefront of your mind at all times and should always be considered with every decision that you make. What a super nice warm coat!
<<elseif $water is true>>\
A single bottle of water can be the differece between life and death. A body can survive 3 weeks without food, but only 3 days without water. Dehydration is a killer so water should be at the top of your priority list.
At least 518,000 people are hospitalized in the United States each year for dehydration. About 10,000 of those who are admitted to the hospital for dehydration each year die there. The water bottle itself has other uses as well. You can use it to boil water making it safe to drink, you can use it to collect and store small food items such as berries and insects, and you can heat it near a fire and put it inside your clothes to keep you warm.
<<elseif $camera is true>>\
A camera has many uses when you find yourself in a survival situation. If it is functional, you can use the Flash to signal for help. It can be very effective from long distances and even more effective in low light or overcast skies. The battery can be removed and used to start a fire or charge a cellphone. A lenses can be removed and utilized to start a fire. The strap can be used for lashing or to make a small animal snare. Or, if you find yourself nearing the end of your "journey", you could throw caution to the wind and get an epic selfie with a grizzly bear. Wouldn't recommend it but totally up to you.
<<elseif $guitar is true>>\
Believe it or not, a guitar can be used in a survival situation. The strings can easily be removed and used as lashings or for small animal snares. The rest of the guitar could be broken up and used to get a fire started. There are not many other uses for it other than to play a little tune for the Pilot ...too soon??
<<elseif $laptop is true>>\
A laptop computer has only two uses for your situation. First, you could take that battery out and use it to make a fire. The only other use I can think of is to flat out get some work done. Think about it, there's no noise, no phone ringing, no emails to deal with, no kids fighting, there's really nothing to keep you from crouching down and getting some real work done while you are waiting for rescue. You could document your survival adventure, or start that novel that you've alway been talking about. You could even... Shit, battery is dead!
